Civil – Dare I Say Enjoyable – Discourse ...

Last night, I met up with a friend who had come to town for a conference.

We always have interesting conversations. He's smart and funny, his arguments well-considered and well-presented.

Much of the evening – which flew by – was dominated by a discussion of politics.

He describes himself a social liberal and a fiscal conservative so we don't view politics through identical lenses.

But I had a lovely time, exchanging ideas with him, considering my views in light of another person's perspective.

So it is possible to have a productive discussion with someone of an at least slightly different political stripe.

But I still watched Keith Olbermann when I got home.

: o )

So I'm guessing your conversation didn't include you calling them a unimaginative racist, eh?

I've never called anyone an unimaginative racist.

But do tell, Jeff: Why your continued use of "B. Hussein Obama"?

Do you just think his middle name is really cool? Are you a fan of J. Edgar Hoover? Or do you do it because you know it's inflammatory?

Why is it inflammatory? It's his name.

Most people, with the exception of C. Thomas Howell and a few others, aren't referred to as first initial/middle name.

Those who choose to use B. Hussein Obama do it to emphasis his middle name because it invokes fears of Muslim culture.

Correct?

Why would a Christian man invoke fears of a Muslim culture?

Why would only those on the right of the political spectrum use "B. Hussein Obama"?

The media refers to him as President Obama or President Barack Obama.

The "B. Hussein Obama" convention is very intentional, which you know, which is why you use it as invective.

It sounds like your friend is pretty cool, although I think I am fiscally liberal while socially conservative (while not entirely, I favour legalising gay marriage and I am pro-choice, but I am conservative in other areas, like the death penalty).

Disingenuousness, thy name is Jeff.

Dude, who are you kidding? When you use a tactic which is widely acknowledged as one which is designed to inflame the emotions of the uninformed, do you really think you can get away with it by simply asking a question as your answer to a question?

I'll answer on your behalf: "why do you think I am answering every question with a question, Rick?"

You are clearly someone with multiple brain cells which you are able to direct toward a common thought. Engage them, Jeff, in substantive discussion rather than playing games with words as emotional triggers.

Until you choose to do so, I can only reply to all of your comments above with a repeated snooze. Nothing there to prompt my response.

Was I looking to prompt your response?
