'The Jane Austen Book Club' ...

This just in: Love is complicated.

Well, that sounds glib, doesn't it?

I don't mean to sound glib. I really liked this movie. A chick flick, to be sure, but a well-written chick flick. Interesting characters, interesting relationships.

And Maria Bello looks exactly like my friend Gretchen. Or Gretchen looks exactly like her, really. Maria is older.

As much as I am soooooo not the demographic for this movie, I really enjoyed it as well, with three relatively minor complaints:

1) That the filmmakers felt the need to cut everyone's age by about 10 years across the board from what they were in the book.

2) That they cast someone as fabulous as Lynn Redgrave and then gave her virtually nothing to do.

3) That the only woman not to obviously end up with a S.O. by the end of the movie is the only lesbian among the regulars. (I don't know if that's how the book ended or not.)

Other than that, a great Saturday afternoon flick.
