'The Lake House' ...

I remember hearing Sandra Bullock, when doing press for this movie, advising viewers not to try to think through the time-travel aspect of the film and to just go along for the romance ride.

Which is good advice, but if you have half a brain in your head, once you realize that they're not living in parallel universes, you can't help but think, "Why the hell doen't she just Google him?!" But then we wouldn't have much of a movie, would we?

Keanu Reeves isn't a dramatic actor. He's just not. His delivery seems wooden or off-tempo. But the entire world seems to agree that he and Sandra Bullock are magic together on screen. Sandra is as adorable as ever. And we're treated on two occasions to clips of "Notorious," and we all know what as sucker I am for Cary Grant.

But it was just too hard to buy the mailbox as a portal between 2004 and 2006, too hard not to see all the potential flaws in the logic of this film. Like, sure, it's cute that he paints a message to her on the side of a building in 2004, but two years later, why wouldn't that have been painted over? Or why does her newly constructed high-rise condo have floorboards and joists? So she can find something he left for her during the construction of the building, of course.

Sadly, I opened a bottle of pinot noir after watching this film. I think I should have started drinking before.
